- Letzte Aktualisierung:
The year 2024 is just around the corner and will bring significant changes to the CO2 tax for vehicles. In this article, you will learn everything you need to know about the changes in order to be well prepared for 2024.
Contents
1. centralization of enforcement by the SFOE
From January 1, 2024, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) will take over enforcement of the CO₂ levy. What does that mean for you? Make sure that you process all necessary applications and notifications via the SFOE from this point onwards.
2. digitization of CO₂ taxation
From 1 January 2024, the processing of the CO₂ levy will be significantly simplified by digitalization on the DETEC e-government portal.
This step represents a significant improvement in efficiency and user-friendliness in the administration of the CO₂ levy.
Main functions of the digital portal:
Online registration for importers: As a major importer or member of an emissions pool, you can simply register online. The digital platform makes it easier for you to manage your CO₂ obligations efficiently.
Management of emission allowances: The platform offers you the possibility to manage emission rights and issue powers of attorney for their transfer, which is crucial for optimizing your emissions balance.
Update your organizational data: Always keep your organizational data up to date. This is essential for the correct calculation and processing of your CO₂ payments.
3. new reference weights
The reference weights for vehicles are adjusted. For passenger cars, the reference weight increases from 1,693 kg to 1,727 kg and for light commercial vehicles from 2,094 kg to 2,117 kg.
This change is particularly relevant if you have larger or better equipped vehicles in your range. This means that some vehicles that were previously just below the reference weight could now be subject to higher charges.
4. new sanction amount
At the same time, the amount of the sanction will be reduced from CHF 101 to CHF 95. This means a slight financial relief, but you should still check the effects of the changed weight limits carefully. Plan your vehicle order and calculation accordingly to avoid unexpected costs.
5. significant change to the deadline: 12 months instead of 6 months
The previous regulation, according to which imported vehicles that had not been registered abroad for more than 6 months were exempt from the CO₂ tax, will be changed.
From January 1, 2024, this period will be extended to 12 months. Vehicles that have been registered for more than 6 months and have driven more than 5,000 km remain exempt.
This means that more imported vehicles could be affected by the CO₂ levy, especially those that have been registered abroad for longer.
